For the past eight years, we’ve been caring for a Hickory tree in Buckhead. Many years previous, a lost limb led to decay deep inside of the tree. This tree was beautiful and contributed to the curb appeal of the home on a high ridge line. The home owners did not want to remove it, and we’ve worked to reduce risk from high winds.

Over the years we’ve applied a number of measures to keep this tree as healthy and safe as possible, including “thinning of the sail” – effectively reducing its tree canopy and the associated weight so that high winds didn’t cause a structural loss.

Den 6 Learns About Hickory Tree

During a cub scout exercise a few years ago, this tree was a stop on our tour to talk about maintaining trees and Urban Forestry.

Unfortunately time has marched on, and internal decay took control. This past fall, the owner noticed a few small cankers (they look like clams) growing about four feet off the ground. And, they kept growing and spreading.

By the new year we knew this was a serious problem we could not alleviate. We contacted the City of Atlanta arborist, obtaining a permit to remove the dying tree. The lesson to share today is that you can take efforts to extend the life of old trees but you need to keep an eye out for the danger signs, like these cankers. Take a look at the video for more details on what we found.

As many of you know, the Caldwell family experienced a tragic house fire in the middle of the night last week. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The outpouring of support has been tremendous.

We would like to thank all of our neighbors, customers, employees, friends, and family for helping us regroup during this past week.

The Roswell Fire Department, led by Fire Chief Ricky Spencer, was there in minutes. Fire Marshall Paul Piccirilli has been particularly helpful as we’ve work through the recovery process.

And, an extra call out to Fireman Chris, who only the week before, was visiting Sweet Apple Elementary and talking about fire safety to our children. Fortunately, their reactions when we all awoke were the correct ones.

And, finally, many thanks to our insurance agent Pete Protis at USAA, who has been an amazing source of strength.

The Caldwell Tree Care team remains on the job, working hard, and ready to serve your tree and plant health care needs.

Shot hole, also called Corenyum Blight, is a fungal disease that infects trees by causing lesions on buds, leaves, twigs, and fruit. This fungal disease flourishes during long wet springs, or warm wet winters. During the winter, it grows inside of trees and infects twigs and buds. As the fungus continues to grow, the leaves turn raggedy and fall. As a result, the tree will be unable to perform photosynthesis leaving it stressed to the point where it becomes more susceptible to insect attacks. Since this fungus is very hard to control, the best treatment would be to apply a preventive fungicide.

Take a look at what Kevin Caldwell, Owner of Caldwell Tree Care has to say about treating this issue in this new video.
